The Courage To Be Different
Starting a business is no easy feat. It’s an endeavor that is difficult and stressful. There are a lot of reasons why someone would start a business. That person might see an unmet need or an entry point into the market that is different from what currently exists. They may be driven by life circumstances, a passion they want to pursue, or by knowing in their gut that there’s a better way to do things. Whatever reason they have, the act of setting your own course and going out on your own is a courageous act. There’s a lot of risk involved and the deck is usually stacked against you. The entrepreneurial journey is not for those who want the status quo. The entrepreneurial journey requires the courage to be different.
I had a chance to talk with Dorothy Illson on her podcast, Do Well and Do Good, about the entrepreneurial journey I have been on. It was fun having this discussion with Dorothy for a number of reasons. Dorothy and I went to the same college (#loveandhonor) and both were accounting majors at Miami University, although our paths definitely went two different directions, which we touched on in the podcast. I like sharing my entrepreneurial journey, but it was also exciting to talk with her because I have seen her entrepreneurial journey first hand. Lance CPA Group does work for her company, Needle’s Eye Media, and I got to meet Dorothy when she was first starting her business. It has been exciting to see how her business has grown and be along for the ride on her entrepreneurial journey.
Do Well and Do Good’s mission is to profile different people and hear their story of how they do well, whether it’s the business they have started or the work they do each day. And also, to hear what they do good, meaning how do they leverage their success to better the world. It was a pleasure being on her podcast and getting a chance to tell my story.
